TRANSCRIPTION:

Postmarks in upper right (enhanced) clearly read Mürren, Switzerland. Lower left postmark (enhanced), however, city is still unclear, perhaps "__ E G A V __ __ __ A __ E" [?]

TRANSCRIPTION

Dear Mr. Magnus, as we will probably
play again next summer at Bayreuth,
I'll have much to work and to travel
for it. I must know before how long
this Russian trip takes (and with which
orchestras!) Then I can decide. Perhaps
I could do it in November but all depends
how it is with the time[?]. Please address
me to Bayreuth. [?] sincerely

Siegfried Wagner

Mürren Kurhaus1

Mr. Maurice Magnus2
Hotel des Deuse Villes
La Hage, Holland

Stamp: 10  Helvetica (Switzerland)
Lower left postmark: [Illegible] 1  9

                                               1908

NOTES:

1. Mürren Kurhaus: "Kurhaus" is a clinic or nursing center. Wagner could be referring to a literal clinic in which he was staying, but there was also the Grand Hotel Kurhaus in the city of Mürren, Switzerland, where he may have been a guest. The Grand Hotel Kurhaus was a popular chalet resort in the early 1900s. [Thanks to visitor D.F. from the UK.]

2. Maurice Magnus (1876-1920) was an American writer and friend of author D.H. Lawrence. Magnus wrote about his service in the French Foreign Legion. He is described as being "egregious" or outrageously offensive.

3. Mürren calls itself the "Jewel of the Bernese Oberland Switzerland." It is located in central Switzerland just north of the famous Jungfrau near alpine towns of Grindenwald and Aeschi.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER:

Above is a German cartoonist's idea of the conducting of Richard Wagner's son in characteristic attitudes while conducting his father's work. (Source unknown)
