        In consideration of your exonerating me

from setting the whole of the opera ‘The

Lady of Lyons’4 and of my receiving

when paid to you, proportionate terms.

Thereby promise to set and deliver

to you 2 or 3 of the lyrics5 of the

aforesaid opera by

or Love and Pride," a play by Edward Bulwer Lytton (1806-1873), first performed on
     Thursday, the 15th of February, 1838, at Covent Garden Theatre.
This play served as libretto (by Hersee)
     for Frederic H. Cowen's
1876 4-act opera, Pauline, first performed at the Lyceum, London

ABOUT  THE   COMPOSER

According to The Musical Times, (No. 640, Vol. 37, June 1, 1896, p. 385), RE: Bridlington Festival. (Bridlington is described in the article as a "quaint fishing village.") "The programme included also The Three Ravens with a clever orchestral accompaniment by Mr. Coleridge-Taylor." [N.B. The Three Ravens is a traditional ballad that dates from the 17th century or earlier.]
