Ludwig Philipp Scharwenka (1847 - 1917) was an eminent German composer and music teacher. He studied with Wüerst and Dorn at the Kullak Academy of Music in Berlin. In 1868, he was appointed teacher of composition there. With his brother Xaver, they founded their own conservatory in Berlin in 1881. They both came to America in 1891. In 1893 the Scharwenka Conservatory was merged with the Kindworth Conservatory that acquired an excellent reputation. Philipp composed a symphony, a violin concerto, chamber music, the Arkadische Suite for Orchestra, a symphonic poem Frühlingswogen and Dramatische Fantasie for orchestra, as well as numerous pieces for piano.
