Sir, firstly, may I
thank you for your suggestion of a collaboration and for
your charming letter. If I were to agree to write the music for your beautiful
poem, it would tie your poem up for some years as I have agreements and
obligations which I must respect. Later I would happily be at your service,
but if meanwhile I should find a subject that suited me better I would regret
having committed myself to you. I think, therefore, that I should excuse myself.
Please believe that I am grateful for your kind suggestion.
