Dear Friend,

Thanks for the clippings3. I hope you enjoy the old song. Some of these days I may be an ex. P.O.4 myself. Glad to hear from [you] anytime.

Yours in song,

NOTES:

3. Probably refers to article in New York World-Telegraph (Friday, April [n.d.], 1933) and another photo/caption (source unknown) that appeared April 15, 1928 probably in New York City.

4. Refers to the fact that Gerard was himself a New York post office clerk

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Richard Gerard Husch  [AKA Richard H. Gerard] (1876-1948) wrote the lyrics to Sweet Adeline to the music of Harry Armstrong (1879-1951). The song was  first published in 1903.

The following quote is from a photo/caption (source unknown) that appeared April 15, 1928 probably in New York City:
"Richard [Dick] Gerard [Husch], employed in the New York post office, has at least one claim to fame. He composed [authored] "Sweet Adeline," that ballad of humble sentiment which has broken the hearts of more than bar-room quartets. Cornered at his desk, Gerard admitted to an interviewer that the song was inspired by a girl who worked at the music counter of a New York department store."
